Orbit Homepage Evolution

Seven versions in nine months

Project Overview

Orbit is Zero Gravity's study app for A-Level and GCSE students. Its home screen is the first thing a student sees each time they open it, and it has been redrawn more often than any other screen in the app.

This is that screen from the first commit to the one running now, one version at a time, with a screenshot of each taken from the code as it was then.

TL;DR

The home screen started as two lines of text on 9 January. It is now a sidebar, a row of subject tabs and a box to ask a question in. On the way it was a landing page, a camera, a set of intent cards, a stack of cards with a map of what the student had covered, and finally a place to start a conversation.

What moved most was the first action. The student went from pressing Start Learning, to taking a photo, to choosing Coach me, Check my work or Test me, to carrying on with an assignment, to typing a question. The screen stopped explaining the app and started waiting for the student.

Every screenshot is the real app at that commit, booted with made-up data.

The starting point

A route and two lines of text

Orbit's first commit is dated 9 January 2026. Its home screen was the first route added to the app, and it has been rebuilt six times since. Each version below is shown as a student would have met it: on a phone, and on a laptop where the two differ.
